Following on from our article last week, ‘restarting the supply chain’, we have outlined six aspects of the value chain that organisations should pay particular attention to, both internally and externally, to ensure alignment before reopening.

From an external perspective, organisations should consider:

DEMAND

  • Resetting Sales and Operations Planning as customers re-establish their requirements.
  • Prioritise based on product profitability and allocate based on customer priority.
  • Develop a ‘demand plan’ and anticipate potential issues.

SUPPLIER AND SOURCING

  • Ensure sourcing of essential products/supplies are in place, besides PPE.
  • Update supplier contracts, SLAs and adjust schedules.
  • Refresh the collaborative planning process with key suppliers.

INVENTORY

  • Refocus and update inventory and increase replenishment rates.
  • Confirm stocking profiles are in the right place to meet the customer needs.
  • Ensure processes are in place to monitor & drive inventory assurance.

From an internal perspective, organisations should consider:

WORKFORCE

  • Rollout safety guidelines and identify staffing requirements.
  • Communicate new work schedules that align with updated guidelines.
  • Develop rapid response procedures and deploy relevant technology to manage workers remotely.

PRODUCTION ASSETS

  • Streamline manufacturing distribution and operational workflows/layouts.
  • Align production capability with demand plans.
  • Perform readiness asset health checks for key production assets.

DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS

  • Pre-book and secure transportation capacity.
  • Review third party logistics and carrier contracts for recovery support options.
  • Review transportation and container planning in light of partial reopening.

Companies that can stabilise their supply chains and provide structured responses to future risk will be in a position to ensure resilience. With so much at stake, for employees and for business continuity, it’s critical to get the restart right. Book a demo to view our solution in action.
